Polar night in Lofoten

The phenomenon of polar night occurs north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Southern Arctic Circle in winter.
During this period, the sun does not rise above the horizon.

The polar night is at its shortest near the Arctic Circle and increases in duration the closer you are to the poles. It is at its longest at the pole itself, where it lasts for six months.

Many people think that during the polar night it is dark around the clock, but this is not true. Due to the twilight effect, there is quite a lot of light in the middle of the day.

In fact, during the polar night, you can have great experiences with light and color. Often there is a colorful red tinge from the sun that lies below the horizon and the moonlight also sets a good mood.

Last but not least; the Northern Lights can be fascinating.

The areas that have the polar night in winter have the midnight sun during a similar period in the summer.
In Svolvær it is the polar night from December 7 to December 6. January.

At Røst, the sun is visible all year round due to its location south-west, and unobstructed view of the horizon.
