Midnight sun in Lofoten
Midnight sun means that the sun does not disappear below the horizon, and is thus visible 24 hours a day.
During all or part of the period between the spring equinox and the autumn equinox, there is midnight sun north of the Arctic Circle.
The proportion of the year when there is midnight sun increases with the distance from the Arctic Circle in the direction of the pole. The proportion is greatest at the pole, where there is midnight sun six months a year.
Play of colours from the sky
In the land of the midnight sun, the sun moves low above or just below the horizon for many hours on summer nights. This can give an incredible play of colors that can last for many hours.
There are stories of tourists who have been very disappointed when, at midnight, they have stood and waited for this special midnight sun and gradually realized that it is the same sun that they have seen all day.
Midnight sun in summer = polar night in winter
The areas that have the midnight sun in the summer have a polar night for a correspondingly long period of time in the winter. Due to the twilight effect, the polar night in Lofoten does not mean that it is dark 24 hours a day. It is still light for a few hours during the day in the same way that it is light for a while before sunrise.
