Viking Festival 2018 in Lofoten

From 8 to 12 August 2018, the annual Viking Festival will be held at the Lofotr Viking Museum – this time with an even greater focus on children.

Viking Bootcamp – one of the successes from last year is being repeated, there will be Gjøglerskole, Snorre’s Snurresaga with Magnus (known from NRK Super with the dragon Kosinus) and several Viking games with Sweden’s best “leketrel”. There will also be a reunion with the very popular storyteller Jerker Fahlström, and a reprise of the fighter show “Mjød og Bacon”. From the list of fun competitions are the ring-carrying and rowing competition. There will be living storytelling through games and activities for young and old, 5 days until the end when 150 Vikings and thousands of members of the public meet.

Lofotr Viking Festival aims to be a festival for the whole family, and this year has a greater focus on activities for children than ever before. For a full 5 days until the end, Vikings from many countries meet at Borg in Lofoten. The Vikings specialize in both activities and crafts that belong to the Viking Age, including archery, juggling, leather work, blacksmithing and textile work. Festival guests can see these activities and, not least, participate in them themselves.

After last year’s success, the organizer has again brought in Ben Clarke from England itself. At home in the island kingdom, Ben runs a company that travels around schools and has Viking days for the children. This year, he has even more fun activities in store here at Borg, and will contribute to ensuring that this year’s festival is soon forgotten by the children. Viking Bootcamp is going to be very popular! The rich program also includes an archery competition for the children, a juggling school and Kjell Braathen’s fantastic commitment and storytelling pleasure in his lecture on music in the Viking Age.

One of this year’s novelties for the families is Tony Blom who comes from Sweden to have different games and activities every day at the festival. Wherever he goes, he is a very popular feature. There is also a lot of fun for adults. New this year is ring-wearing, we continue with the popular rowing competition, the Vikings’ fashion show and much, much more.

Workshops and courses for adults.

There will be a number of courses and workshops throughout the festival, by the skilled textile and craft intermediary Kristin Nordeng, from Ravn Formidling.

Storynight with Tokk

New this year is an evening event on Thursday evening. Storytelling is organized with a meal inside the forest with the storyteller Tokk. This event has separate ticket sales, and there are limited places. Included is a hot meal consisting of the museum’s famous lamb stew.

Mead and beer can be bought along the way. The organizer promises an atmospheric evening with Tokk’s wonderful stories and storytelling around the campfire. The event takes place in English.

Fighter show

The group Skaltadal is performing this year with a reprise of the fighter show Mjød og Bacon. The organizer promises a good mix of action and humor in this terrific show, which is performed twice a day.

Flame show

After dark, the Trudr juggler troupe holds its spectacular flame show outside Høvdinghuset. This only happens on Friday at 23.00 (separate tickets).

Jerker Fahlström

Jerker is a Swedish actor, director and storyteller of a rare caliber, and the organizer is happy and proud that he is making the trip to our festival this year. With his performance “Om guder, helter og småfolk” he will enchant the audience, and draw them into his world, 1000 years back in time.

Snorres snurresaga

Also new this year is Snorre’s Snurresaga, with Ingrid Aune and Magnus Winsvold. Interactive stories are told here, where the children themselves help create the course of the story. Ingrid is a unique communicator, with extensive experience, and Magnus is also known as Kosinus himself, the math dragon from children’s TV on NRK.

The Lofotr Viking Museum and the Viking Festival welcome you to 5 new days filled with markets, concerts, theatre, courses, games and lots of fun for everyone!
