Fiskarkona in Svolvær

Fiskarkona, or as we say here in the north, the “feskarkjærringa” (The fisherman’s wife), was made by the sculptor Per Ung (1933 – 2013) and stands at the far end of the breakwater at the entrance to Svolvær.

With her 4.5 meter height in bronze, she looks out over the Vestfjord and greets the fishermen who are out fishing. At the same time, her hand is sheltered from the weather as she scouts out to sea, worrying about whether she will get her husband home safe and sound this evening as well.

The sculpture was completed in 1999 and was financed with, among other things, the help of several private individuals and companies. The fish wife is a favorite photo object for anyone who owns a camera near her.
