Rokkan is considered one of the world’s foremost social scientists in the post-war period and is therefore called the statesman of the social sciences.
From Holandshamn
Stein Rokkan was born in the village of Holandshamn, not far from Digermulen in Austre Vågan in Lofoten, but the family moved early to Narvik, where Stein went to school and graduated from Narvik Gymnas as a priest at the age of 17.
More known internationally
Rokkan’s merits are many, and in the academic community at the University of Bergen, he is immodestly called the statesman of the social sciences.
This is due to the influence he has had in this part of research, the initiatives he has taken and the roles he has played.
In international academic literature, Rokkan is the most cited Norwegian social scientist. It is perhaps not so surprising, then, that former professor Henry Valen stated that Nordland had fostered only two internationally known people, namely Knut Hamsun and Stein Rokkan.
