Sheltered from German attacks
At its peak, about 30 vessels were on the fjord sheltered from German attacks.
One of these vessels was the almost sinkable cruiser “Penelope” which was towed into the fjord by the destroyer “Eskimo”.
“Eskimo” immediately returned to Narvik, but the very next day she arrived again in Skjelfjord with a large part of the foreship blown away.
Memorial meeting
Skjelfjord Residents’ Association has gathered some information from these events, and invites Saturday 10.
April for a remembrance meeting at the youth house.
This is an invitation to those who may have something, big or small, to tell from the days of the war in Lofoten – and especially from Skjelfjord.
If you have photos, documents or other things you want to share with us, please bring it. The information will be collected and considered filmed for preservation for posterity. The initiators hope that many people can gather for this meeting, where representatives from Moskenes and Flakstad history teams also participate.

Memorial
Skjelfjord Residents’ Association unveiled on 28.
August 2010 a memorial to these events.
The marker will be placed at the breakwater on the west side of Skjelfjord.
At this ceremony came one of the soldiers, Bill Harlow, who was the crew of the “Penelope” while it was being repaired on the Skjelfjord.
He lives in Australia, and it is he you see in the picture with the boy Magnus Johan Pedersen in Skjelfjord.
