In our region, it was Narvik that first felt the invasion, and met the German invasion fleet that sailed in towards Narvik harbor.
The two ironclad ships “Norway” and “Eidsvold” were both sunk by German torpedoes with heavy Norwegian losses, one ship sank in only 14 seconds and took almost the entire crew with it.
In the weeks that followed, the hostilities in the Narvik area were followed by the whole world, which has made the city known far beyond national borders.
