Mortsund
Mortsund is an idyllic little fishing village located south facing on Vestvågøya, right in the heart of Lofoten.
For centuries, the seasonal migration of spawning cod from the Barents Sea between January and April brought many fishermen to Mortsund and the surrounding islands.
The first settlements were in Bårsundet and on the islands of Brandsholmen and Gullholmen. The sea was a connecting link, while the mountains created isolation. After the road to Mortsund was finished in the early 1920’s, the fishing village developed rapidly. It’s known that by the late 1800’s, many fishermen’s cabins were already here.
Until recently, Mortsund had its own postal code, but it is now served by Leknes.
