Kabelvåg The old town in Lofoten
Kabelvåg is the oldest fishing village in Lofoten.
The commercial part of the Lofoten fishery started here approx.
1000 years ago.
Fishermen from all over northern Norway flocked to the waves around Kabelvåg, the old Vågan, to harvest their share of the annual supply of skrei. Vågan eventually grew to become the center of medieval Hålogaland.
Today, Kabelvåg is primarily a place for schools, culture and tourism. The business community does not have the breadth that it used to have in society. Kabelvåg has an art and film college and a folk high school. Vågan Church, also known as Lofoten Cathedral, with its 1,200 seats, is the largest wooden church north of Trondheim. Bishop Berggrav named the church Lofotkatedralen in 1929.
West of Kabelvåg lies Storvågan.
Here you will find the old medieval center of Vågar.
Today, the area is a cultural and tourist center.
Here you can explore the Lofoten Museum, which is the regional museum for Lofoten.
You’ll also find Galleri Espolin, where many of Kaare Espolin Johnson’s paintings are displayed, and the Lofoten Aquarium, as well as the Nyvågar tourist and rorbu facility.
