Diving and snorkeling

Below the sea surface in Lofoten you will find a fantastic underwater fauna with kelp forests and walls covered in colorful anemones.

Schools of cod and saithe are a common sight. At the bottom there are monkfish and catfish, troll crabs, flounder, cock shells and nudibranchs, to name a few. In addition, there are many exciting shipwrecks to dive on.

The Gulf Stream pumps incessantly clean Atlantic water past Lofoten and Vesterålen on its way north, ensuring a rich marine life.

Scuba diving

The region has current dives that can be compared to diving in Saltstraumen. Whether you dive in the extremely narrow Raftsundet, in the Efjorden or in the open sea in Moskstraumen, you can get good speed on your dives. Moskstraumen is known as one of the world’s strongest tidal currents and some experience with diving is required before you tackle the ocean current.

Wreck diving

You can dive on a number of exciting wrecks in the area. Among other things, warships, cargo ships and old Hurtigruten. In the Ofotfjord there are a number of wrecks of warships. Divers from all over the world come to Narvik every year to experience the wrecks outside the ore town. There are also newer wrecks you can dive on, such as the Icelandic trawler “Gudrun Gísladottír” that sank in Nappstraumen in the summer of 2002.

One of the older wrecks you can dive on is the old Hurtigruten ship Nordstjernen, which sank under dramatic circumstances in Raftsundet in the autumn of 1954.
