Lofoten is an archipelago located at 67th and 68th parallels, in the west of the ocean north of the Arctic Circle. The islands consist of Austvågøya, Gimsøy, Vestvågøya, Flakstadøya, Moskenesøya, Værøy and Røst.

The district consists of the six municipalities of Vågan, Vestvågøy, Flakstad, Moskenes, Værøy and Røst, as well as the parts of Hadsel that are located on Austvågøy, with over 24,000 inhabitants. Between the mainland and the Lofoten Wall lies the Vestfjord. Lofoten is known for its spectacular scenery with mountains and peaks, the open sea, coves, beaches and large unspoiled land areas.
